How to Use a Bissell Spot Bot on Berber Carpet

The Bissell Spot Bot and Spot Bot 'Pet' version claim to be carpet cleaners that you can just push a button and walk away from. It sits on the stain and runs a series of brushes and suction with carpet cleaning water/chemicals. It takes about five minutes to clean a spot.

But...if you have Berber-style carpet, you can end up making the stain worse, unless you use the following tip:

** use the attached suction nozzle to soak up extra water AFTER the cleaning cycle is done **

The reason is that the Berber carpet is 'hard' enough to keep the rim of the Spot-Bot from sealing tight against the rug. Therefore there is not as much suction, and the device leaves a wet spot (of nice, dirty water) on the carpet.

However, it has done a really remarkable job of cleaning the rug...just not of getting the dirty water up. Leaving the spot wet afterward will actually make a perfectly round stain. By using the attached 'wand' with the suction handle, you can remove the additional brown water, and have a really clean berber carpet!

How to Clean Wicker Furniture

Wicker is the term used for any type of woven furniture. For example, a rattan chair is a type of wicker made from a special species of palm tree.

Wicker is known to be a dust-catcher. All of the tiny nooks and crannies make it difficult to clean.

The best way to clean it is to start with a vacuum cleaner with some kind of brush attachment. Vacuum the entire chair, on all surfaces, top and bottom. Once that is done, take a damp cloth and wipe down the entire chair.

Sometimes it may be helpful to oil the chair (all wood needs oil to help it stay conditioned). You can work the oil into the wicker with a brush, but thin it a bit first by mixing it with thinner. After you brush it on, you can buff out the excess with a dry cloth.

How to Clean Clad Coins

"Clad" is the term used for the zinc/copper clad coins that are used for most modern coins.

Metal detectorists that find these coins often collect them until they have a big pile and then cash them in, since they have no value for collecting (other than the face value of the coin itself).

Some folks just leave the coins dirty and use a Coinstar machine to cash them in.

If you want to clean them yourself, the best practice is to use a small rock tumbler. Put some aquarium sand or small aquarium gravel in with a few squirts of liquid dish detergent. Do NOT add water, as that will make the soap sudsy and will leak from the tumbler. Put the coins in with the sand/detergent mix and tumble for 6-24 hours, depending on how bad they are.

Do NOT tumble pennies in with nickles, dimes and quarters, or the 'silver' coins will take on the copper color from the pennies. So, tumble your nickles, dimes and quarters together, then do a second batch with just your pennies.
